Behind the Headlines Video
It was Sarah Josepha Hale's efforts that eventually led to the holiday we now celebrate as Thanksgiving. After a 40-year campaign of writing to governors and presidents through her Boston Ladies' Magazine, Hale's passion became a reality when President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.
As President Lincoln so aptly stated: the year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God".
This Thanksgiving when we sit down to the table with our family, friends and relatives, we need to give thanks to the Lord for our accomplishments as a nation. We need to remember that his love endures forever. (Psalm136:1).
We should find inspiration in His love, and give thanks for the truly beautiful things in life.
