A federal judge threw out a lawsuit by two Sioux tribes [Spirit Lake Sioux and Standing Rock Sioux] to preserve the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota. 

[The judge ruled the tribes didn't have legal standing to sue even though in 1969 both tribes gave permanent rights to the university to use the Fighting Sioux nickname.]

In 2005, the NCAA sanctioned 18 schools claiming they used "hostile and abusive" Native American nicknames.   Tribes associated with Florida State, Utah, Central Michigan and North Dakota endorsed the use of Seminole, Ute, Chippewa and Fighting Sioux. So, the NCAA gave exemptions to the first three schools.  But not to North Dakota.

The NCAA is being politically correct, inconsistent and hypocritical.  Bradley University was targeted for using "Braves."  The University of North Carolina at Pembroke was permitted to use "Braves."  "Fighting Sioux" is offensive.  "Fighting Irish" is okay.

Here are just some of the school nicknames that identify with race, ethnicity, or culture the NCAA has deemed acceptable:  Aggies, Aztec, Brave, Cavaliers, Colonials, Cornhuskers, Cowboys, Crusaders, Diplomats, Dons, Dutch, Dutchmen, Flying Dutchmen, Engineers, Fightin' Engineers, Fighting Irish, 49ers, Friars, Gaels, Gauchos, Generals,  Highlanders, Indians, Jaspers, Knights, Leathernecks, Lumberjacks, Miners, Missionaries, Monks, Muleriders, Norse, Ole Miss Rebels, Oilers, Orediggers, Paladins, Pilgrims, Pioneers, Poets, Quakers, Ragin' Cajuns, Railsplitters, Rebels, Redmen, Rivermen, Saints, Savages, Saxons, Scots, Fighting Scots, Sooners, Spartans, Texans, Tribe, Trojans, Vikings, Warriors and Yeomen.

The NCAA should end its political correctness witch-hunt.
