Behind the Headlines Video
2010 was the bloodiest year for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. 499 were killed. More than three times the 155 who died in 2008. Last year was slightly better with 418.
As of mid-June, 144 Americans were killed in Afghanistan in 2012.
In the same time period, 228 people were killed in Chicago. Population 2.7 million versus Afghanistan population of 32 million.
Of course, this is not exactly apples to apples.
Still, one can make the argument that Chicago is a really dangerous place to be an American. It has one of the highest murder rates in America. It’s four times that of New York City.
Which brings me to my second point. A couple of weeks ago, Chicago pulled as many as 200 police officers off the streets and -- wait for it -- used them as private security for the wedding of Laura Jarrett. Who? She’s the daughter of Valerie Jarrett, long time friend and senior adviser to Barack Obama.
Chicago averages less than one murder a day. Eight people were killed that wedding weekend. And Chicago wasn't even reimbursed for police officer salaries.
